Another birthday treat for the husband…Most of my friends say I spoil him too much, but there is something magical about reaching 30 and we had to make the most of it. You’ve seen his Peach and Marshmallow birthday cake on which I spent quite some time playing with the blowtorch…for aesthetic reasons of course. Somehow I couldn’t quite achieve the same standard during the birthday week end with the friends. Going camping being the main contributing factor…although I could have brought the torch…but toasted marshmallows could not possibly be enough for such a big birthday, so here are some real treats to cook at the end of a BBQ: Oranges filled with Chocolate fondant and Macadamia nuts.
Unfortunately, even with our friend Simon’s effort, the pictures are not too good, sorry about that. The plan is to make some posh filled Oranges at home and take proper photos. But too many people have asked for the recipe so here it goes.
First let me acknowledge the person who gave me the idea of this wonderful BBQ dessert: Foodie Quine from Aberdeen @www.foodiequine.co.uk. See her post on Outdoor Cooking here. She is involved in many events and really is the foody queen of Scotland. I am always interested in what she does, such as foraging, outdoor cooking, product reviewing and she is renovating her kitchen which looks amazing!
BBQ Oranges filled with chocolate fondant and macadamia nuts
For 15 oranges
- 15 “empty” oranges, cut at the top and flesh spooned out
- 240g dark chocolate
- 200g butter
- 6 eggs
- 240g caster sugar
- 100g plain flour
- 50g halved macadamia nuts
Add the butter and the chocolate to a pan over a bain marie. When melted, leave aside to cool slightly. Whisk the eggs with the sugar in a big bowl. Add the flour, the chocolate mixture and the nuts, mixing well each time. Leave to rest for 30 minutes before filling the oranges.
If you are doing this at home, fill the oranges and bake at 180C for 15minutes. But if you are taking the desserts with you somewhere else (like camping), I would recommend to fill the oranges, wrap them in foil and freeze. We cooked our oranges nested in disposable BBQ for 20 minutes, using the hot coals left over after cooking the meat. A very unexpected sweet and warm treat after a cold and salty day on the sea side for everyone.
never thought of barbecuing oranges- what do they taste like? They must be super fragrant!
Oh yes very fragrant! The oil from the skin gets mixed with the chocolate and I love chocolate/orange combo!
Unique, but a recipe I would surely like to go for 🙂
Thanks Ema! I love the design of your blog!
Thank you so much dear :). Have a great weekend…
